Purpose:
- The purpose of this series is to display how the Scriptures testify of Christ and how true understanding of the Scriptures is only possible in light of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
- Increase Biblical literacy in our local church.
What is the theme of Scripture? primary purpose of the Bible was to unfold God’s redemptive plan of re-creating mankind into His image through Jesus Christ.
As we journey through the Bible it is going to be important to keep in mind and follow the following:
- The theme of Scripture-God’s redemptive plan of re-creating mankind into His image through Jesus Christ.
- The Adamic Mandate– Genesis 1:28 – Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
- The Seed– The lineage in which Jesus Christ would come from
- The Typologies– The foreshadowing of Christ by way of people, events, and systems
- Prophecies- How God communicated His promises to chosen people before it occurred.
- God Preserving His People—God has displayed throughout redemptive history how He has preserved His people by Grace through Faith.
- The offices of King, Priest, and Prophet- Roles assigned to men throughout redemptive history that were fulfilled in Christ.
- The Covenants- God’s promises throughout redemptive history that peaks in Christ with the New Covenant.
- Representation- How one person’s role or actions benefit/save or condemn a group of people.
Genesis 8:20 NKJV – Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Genesis 7:2 NKJV – “You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that [are] unclean, a male and his female;
Verse 20– of = מִן min= some
Genesis 8:20 ESV – Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Built an altar= Worship
Genesis 22:5 NKJV – And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”
Genesis 22:9 NKJV – Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.
offered burnt offerings= dedication and substitutionary atonement
Leviticus 1:4 NKJV – ‘Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him.
Genesis 8:21 NKJV – And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart [is] evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
LORD smelled a soothing aroma- Anthropomorphic language for God being pleased.
Ephesians 5:1 NKJV – Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.
Ephesians 5:2 NKJV – And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
- Since the fall God introduced the idea of substitutionary atonement.
- Substitutionary atonement– God allowing an animal of his choosing that meets His requirements to temporarily cover a person’s sins by faith.
Leviticus 1:17 NKJV – ‘Then he shall split it at its wings, [but] shall not divide [it] completely; and the priest shall burn it on the altar, on the wood that [is] on the fire. It [is] a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the LORD.
curse the ground for man’s sake- This is not in reference to the curse given in Genesis 3.
Genesis 3:17 NKJV – Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed [is] the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat [of] it All the days of your life.
- This curse is in reference to the curse of the flood.
- Genesis 9:11 NKJV – “Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
imagination of man’s heart [is] evil from his youth- Total Depravity
- Genesis 6:5 NKJV – Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every intent of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually.
- Genesis 8:21 NKJV – And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart [is] evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
- Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV – “The heart [is] deceitful above all [things], And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Grace
- God has a plan to redeem the world back to Himself through the person and work of Jesus Christ (God the Son).
- Genesis 3:15 NKJV – And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
- This seed that God has promised is Jesus Christ and He will come from the lineage of Noah.
3. The Seed- The lineage in which Jesus Christ would come from.
nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done- This is a reference to the flood. God will destroy the world by fire at the end of the age.
2 Peter 3:1 NKJV – Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in [both of] which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder),
2 Peter 3:2 NKJV – that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,
“Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.””
Jude 1:14-15 NKJV
“For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.”
I Thessalonians 5:2-4 NKJV
2 Peter 3:3 NKJV – knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,
2 Peter 3:4 NKJV – and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as [they were] from the beginning of creation.”
2 Peter 3:5 NKJV – For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water,
2 Peter 3:6 NKJV – by which the world [that] then existed perished, being flooded with water.
2 Peter 3:7 NKJV – But the heavens and the earth [which] are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
2 Peter 3:8 NKJV – But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV – The Lord is not slack concerning [His] promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:10 NKJV – But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
2 Peter 3:11 NKJV – Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner [of persons] ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
2 Peter 3:12 NKJV – looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
2 Peter 3:13 NKJV – Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:14 NKJV – Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless;
Genesis 8:22 NKJV – “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night Shall not cease.”
