The Role of Men and Women in the Church
Theme of Pastoral Letters:
1 Timothy 3:15 – but if I am delayed, [I write] so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Point 1: The church is Christ church. Therefore, He defines how we should conduct ourselves in the household of God.
The Gospel:
1 Timothy 2:5 – For [there is] one God and one Mediator between God and men, [the] Man Christ Jesus,
1 Timothy 2:6 – who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,
1 Timothy 2:7 – for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle–I am speaking the truth in Christ [and] not lying–a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
Roles of Men: διαλογίζομαι ὀρέγω
1 Timothy 2:8 – I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;
- This has everything to do with purity. Coming before God without living a life of sin.
- Wrath= ὀρέγω (Angry)
- Doubting= διαλογίζομαι (disputing/arguing)
Why did Paul say this? Because men where meeting for church without addressing sin, teaching false doctrine and causing disputes.
1 Timothy 1:3 – As I urged you when I went into Macedonia–remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
1 Timothy 1:4 – nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.
1 Timothy 6:3 – If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, [even] the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness,
1 Timothy 6:4 – he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions,
1 Timothy 6:5 – useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a [means of] gain. From such withdraw yourself.
Roles for Women:
1 Timothy 2:9 – in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing,
1 Timothy 2:10 – but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.
Point 2: Women draw attention to God and not to yourselves.
1 Timothy 2:11 – Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.
1 Timothy 2:12 – And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.
What does silence mean? She can speak but not in the form of preaching and teaching in a church setting. How do we know?
1 Corinthians 11:5 – But every woman who prays or prophesies with [her] head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.
Why can’t she preach or teach?
- Its not cultural, but historical. It has to do with God’s plan for creation
1 Timothy 2:13 – For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
1 Timothy 2:14 – And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
- The women was never intended to lead the man when it came to the Word of God. God entrusted that to Adam.
- When roles are flipped chaos occurs and sinned is birthed!
2 Corinthians 11:3 – But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
2 Corinthians 11:4 – For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or [if] you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted–you may well put up with it!
1 Timothy 2:15 – Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
- This could be the dealing with the idea that a woman birth the savior of the world.
- This also could mean that bearing and nurturing children is the role of a women that only she can do. This makes sense because Paul is talking about the roles of Christian men and women.
- It can’t mean she will be saved (converted through having children). Not all will marry or have children (1 Cor 7).
- We are saved by grace through faith alone.
What can women do?
- Teach other women and children.
Titus 2:3 – the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—
Titus 2:4 – that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children,
Titus 2:5 – [to be] discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
2 Timothy 1:5– when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
What is the role of the preacher:
Acts 20:27 – “For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.
Acts 20:28 – “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.
Acts 20:29 – “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
Acts 20:30 – “Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
Acts 20:31– “Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
Acts 20:32 – “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
Pastors responsibilities are to:
- Lead under the authority of God (because is God’s church) (verse 28)
- Watch over/Protect the body of Christ. (shepherd the church) (verse 28)
- Why? Because wolves will come in among you (verse 29)
- from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.
Point 3: The attack on the church is coming from among us. False apostates who have never repented and believed the gospel are one of the biggest attacks on the church.
- Teach the Word of God. (declare to you the whole counsel of God) (verse 28).
- commend you to God and to the word of His grace (verse 29)
1 Timothy 3:1 – This [is] a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.
1 Timothy 3:2 – A bishop then must be blameless, the husband (ἄνθρωπος ) of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable (generous to guests), able to teach;
1 Timothy 3:3– not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
1 Timothy 3:4 – one who rules his own house well, having [his] children in submission with all reverence
1 Timothy 3:5 – (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?);
1 Timothy 3:6 – not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the [same] condemnation as the devil.
1 Timothy 3:7 – Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
